"Dokyu"
Critic #3: Eduardo Doronila Lingao
ABC
5 news manager and veteran broadcast journalist Ed Lingao joins Prof.
Danny Arao and documentarian Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala in the three-member
board of critics of "Dokyu: Ang Bagong Mata ng Pinoy Documentaries"
when the award-winning public affairs program returns
on ABC 5 starting May 18, Friday, 10 p.m. "Dokyu" will now be
a competition program, in different levels or categories. For the first
season it will be a student documentary competition.
Lingao
previously assumed the post of ABC 5's head of news operations from 2004
to 2006, the same year he hosted the now-defunct "Frontlines, "
an in-depth news magazine show on ABC 5 which carries viewers to the forefront
of political, economic, social, and even religious conflict aiming to
bring interest back to critical news and elicit active response. Along
with Geann Pineda, Jim Libiran, and Jade Lopez, he also made the 2006
KBP Golden Award nominee "State of War," a documentary which
shows the effects of the national government's all-out war policy against
communist rebels on the lives of innocent civilians and unarmed activists.
An AB
Journalism graduate from UP Diliman, Lingao started his stellar career
as a orrespondent for The Manila Chronicle from 1987 to 1989 then moved
on to The Manila Times as a senior reporter from 1989 to 1992. He landed
his first television job on ABC 5 as a
senior reporter in 1992 before he transferred to ABS-CBN where he became
a reporter for "Hoy Gising!" from 1992 to 1994. He later served
as producer and senior reporter for the former Skycable News, now known
as the ABS-CBN News Channel or ANC, from 1994 to 1998.
The
hard-hitting journalist went back to print media as chief reporter for
news of The Manila Times until 1999, when former Pres. Joseph Estrada
filed a 101-million peso libel suit against the newspaper's executives
and journalists, including Lingao, in response to the controversial "unwitting
ninong" story about the former president witnessing the signing of
a deal between the government-run National Power Corporation and the Argentine
engineering firm IMPSA Asia Ltd. After The Manila Times closed down, he
returned to television as producer and senior correspondent for ABS-CBN's
"The Correspondents" from 1999 to 2004. Along with cameraman
Val Cuenca, he rose to prominence for their actual coverage of the U.S.
war in Iraq.
Lingao
will preview all "Dokyu" finalists and judge them based on the
criteria formulated by the "Dokyu" circle. Winners will be determined
by way of 50 percent text voting/ranking and 50 percent critics' rating.
Each episode will include a critic's review of the featured documentaries
to guide viewers in evaluating the work.
"Dokyu"
has been highly acclaimed for providing incentives as well as an exhibition
platform for independent documentary filmmakers, both professionals and
amateurs/students. "Dokyu" has been recognized by award-giving
bodies including the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) and
the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA).
